Which is Faster: Keyboard vs Controller vs Steering Wheel
July 05, 2025 / SIM RacingChapters
Expand CollapseIn the world of sim racing, your input device can make all the difference. I tested three setups — keyboard, controller, and steering wheel — to see which was fastest over a single lap of the Automation Test Track in BeamNG Drive.
Each test used the same Audi RS4 mod, set to normal drive mode and automatic transmission. Here are the results:
- Keyboard – 2:05.99
- Controller – 2:03.90
- Steering Wheel – 2:01.02
Watch the full video above to see the laps and how each input performed.
Why Was the Steering Wheel the Fastest?
The steering wheel (MOZA R5 with Formula Wheel mod) delivered the best lap thanks to precision and control. With full range steering, progressive throttle/brake pedals, and realistic force feedback, it’s easier to manage grip, braking points and corner speed.
Why Did the Controller Beat the Keyboard?
Controllers (I used an Xbox Wireless Controller) offer analogue triggers and joystick steering, giving smoother inputs than the all-or-nothing binary control of a keyboard. This means better acceleration, braking, and less sliding out of corners.
Why Was the Keyboard Slowest?
The keyboard simply can’t compete for lap times. It’s fine for casual fun, but limited by digital (on/off) inputs. Braking and steering lack finesse, and it’s easy to overshoot or understeer in corners.
Final Thoughts
If you’re after faster lap times in driving sims or games, a steering wheel is clearly the best option. A controller comes close and is a great middle ground. But a keyboard will always be the hardest to control at speed.

FAQs
For realism and precision, a steering wheel is the best choice. For convenience and good performance, a controller is a solid alternative.
If you’re into driving sims or want the best control and immersion, yes. It can massively improve your driving accuracy and lap times.
Yes — while not as precise as a wheel, controllers are very capable. Many players use them effectively in driving games.
Most keyboards only register full left/right or full throttle/brake — there’s no gradual input, which makes smooth driving tough.
I used the MOZA R5 with the Formula Wheel mod, a high-quality force feedback sim racing wheel.
An Xbox Wireless Controller – one of the most common and reliable gamepads for PC gaming.
Yes, most popular devices are supported natively or can be mapped manually in the settings.
Manual is usually faster if used properly, but this test used automatic for consistency across inputs.
It’s a built-in race track used for testing cars — ideal for comparing lap times in a controlled environment.
Definitely. While the input device matters, your skill and familiarity with it also play a huge role in performance.
